Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

Among the prestigious awards she received during her outstanding career, the Nobel Prize for Literature (1991) praised her 'epic writing': a kind of writing in which commitment and testimony come alongside a deep investigation of interracial strife and a stoic defence of the ideals of human dignity, equal rights, freedom of thought and speech. This monograph carefully reconstructs the stages of an amazing artistic and political development, which can be traced back to the first half of the twentieth century and reaches its latest peak with "No Time Like the Present" (2012), Gordimer's fifteenth novel. If the connections with the South African context (from the apartheid age to democracy) cannot be underestimated, in the book I show how Gordimer's illuminating dialogue with History also probes into the inner dimension of individuality and subjectivity. Crucially important is then the role played by the aesthetic imaginary, opening out hermeneutic paths where the artist endeavours to shed light on the truth and thus perform her vivid, 'essential gesture'.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
