Abstract
Tarihi sadece ülkelerin siyasi geçmişleri olarak görmeyen İlber Ortaylı, Türkiye’nin ve dünyanıntoplumsal tarihini aydınlatırken, tarihi verilerle birlikte ekonomik, siyasi, sosyal, kültürel, askeri,hukuki ve edebi verilerden de yeterli derecede yararlanılması gerektiğini kabul etmektedir.Ortaylı’nın “Tarihin Işığında” adlı eseri “Röportajlar” ve “Makaleler” olmak üzere iki ana kısımdanoluşmaktadır. Birinci kısımda, tamamı Ortaylı’nın daha önce farklı yayın organlarına vermiş olduğuröportajlardan oluşan 6 ayrı bölüm, ikinci kısımda ise bazı dergi ve gazetelerde yayınlanmış bazımakalelerinden oluşan 19 bölüm bulunmaktadır.Türkiye’de “halka tarihi sevdiren adam” olarak bilinen Ortaylı, Doğu ve Batı kültürününmukayesesini, toplumun her kesiminin anlayabileceği bir dille anlatmaktadır. Eserin genel olarakanlaşılırlık düzeyinin yüksek olması Ortaylı’nın bu özelliğine endekslidir.Eserin “Röportajlar” adlı ilk kısmının 1. bölümünde (s. 13-27) “Osmanlı ve Roma” başlığı altında,alışılmışın dışında cümleler kuran Ortaylı, Osmanlı’ya yönelik Türkiye’de yaygın olan bazı iddialarıakılcı cevaplarıyla çürütmektedir.
