Abstract

ABSTRACT The Quebec regulatory framework requires that a mine site undergoing closure be restored to an acceptable state. These requirements generally include the revegetation of the entire site, including the tailings facility. However, mine tailings exhibit physical, chemical and biological conditions associated with primary ecological successions, making vegetation establishment challenging. These constraints are exacerbated on sites with significant topographical variations like those in northern Quebec's boreal forest. A randomized complete block design covering 0.9 hectares was established on a dike covered with mine tailings and featuring a 33% slope at the Mont-Wright iron mine in the Fermont region of northeastern Quebec. To study the influence of slope position and hydroseeding dose on the development of arbuscular mycorrhizal symbioses and vegetation, thirty-six plots (4 repetitions), distributed across 3 heights (top, middle, and bottom of the slope), received 1, 2, or 3 layers of hydroseeding in August 2022. The slurry contained a mix of agronomically significant species from the Poaceae, Fabaceae and Brassicaceae families as well as a commercial mycorrhizal inoculant containing the species Rhizophagus irregularis. Parameters related to vegetation (plant community composition, cover rate, above-ground biomass, and foliar nutrient content), arbuscular mycorrhizae (mycorrhization rate and taxonomic diversity), and substrate (nutrient, metal, and metalloid contents and erosion) were studied. During monitoring conducted at the end of the second growing season in 2023, only 8 of the 18 seeded species were identified in the experimental plots, along with the presence of 5 spontaneous successional weed species. The vegetation cover was predominantly composed of grasses from the genera Festuca, Lolium, Phleum, and Agrostis. Festuca was the most abundant genus at the top of the slope, while Lolium was more abundant at the bottom of the slope. Above-ground biomass was more than twice as high at the middle and bottom of the slope compared to the top, with a maximum average of approximately 100 kg/ha. Vegetation cover followed the same trend as above-ground biomass, with a maximum average of around 40%. Foliar N and P contents varied significantly depending on height and the number of hydroseeding layers applied but were within the expected fertility ranges for these crops. Erosion-related data varied significantly based on slope height. Burial rates were higher at the top of the slope, while the thickness of eroded residues was higher at the bottom. Total N and P concentrations in the substrate did not show significant differences between treatments. Increasing the hydroseeding dose had a significant positive impact on the mycorrhization rate of plants in the experimental plots. The maximum average mycorrhization rate was around 12%. Taxonomic analyses did not identify the species Rhizophagus irregularis present in the commercial inoculant added to the hydroseeding slurry. Vegetation succession and the progression of arbuscular mycorrhizal rates following hydraulic seeding on iron mine tailings under northern conditions were documented for the first time as part of this project.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
