Abstract
-- \nABSTRACT : Renewable energies have attracted a lot of attention in the last decades as a green solution to the problem of global warming and its catastrophic effects on all living species. Among these renewable energies, wind energy has been able to stand out in the last few years due to investments and research aimed at improving cost and efficiency. However, weather conditions, especially in northern climates such as Canada, make it difficult to integrate this technology. Indeed, northern conditions favor vibrations of wind turbine blades and ice accretion on the surface. These two problems can lead to a significant loss of efficiency of the wind turbine, unplanned shutdowns, and even the destruction of the blade. This thesis presents an innovative solution to optimize the performance of a wind turbine in weather conditions that favor ice accretion and vibration. This solution consists in using small plates of piezoelectric materials (PZT) added on the surface of the blade to control its vibration on the one hand, and to generate ultrasonic waves on the other hand, which propagate in the structure and break the adhesion between the blade and the ice. A literature review was conducted to understand the phenomena of vibration and icing as well as to identify the state-of-the-art technologies used to control blade vibrations and icing. An equivalence model was developed to approximate the vibration response of the blade by that of an equivalent beam or flat plate. Thus, the equivalent beam found was used to develop a complete analytical model on Matlab, for the system vibration including the damping of the beam and the physical limits of the added PZT actuators. The chosen control law is the PID (Proportional Integral Derivative). A complete optimization was performed using the Genetic Algorithm (GA) to determine the beam parameters such as the damping coefficient, the best location of the PZT actuator/sensor pair and the control law parameters. The results for vibration control show significant effectiveness of piezoelectric materials in quickly eliminating vibrations. The effectiveness of this system for vibration control has been studied experimentally and significant reductions in vibration levels have been achieved. We also present a case study on the application of these elements in the vibration control of ships. On the other hand, numerical simulations are done via COMSOL Multiphysics on the blade model with PZT actuators placed in the same position as the one obtained for the vibration control. The correct actuator excitation frequency was calculated, and the actuator power supply voltage using this frequency demonstrated its ability to generate fairly large transverse XZ forces capable of breaking the adhesion between the plate surface and the ice. In summary, this thesis validated the proposed concept of the effectiveness of piezoelectric materials as a vibration and de-icing control system. -- Mot(s) clé(s) en anglais : Wind turbine, renewable energy, vibration control, de-icing, optimization, genetic algorithm, piezoelectric materials.
