Depuis le début 2003, le CRDA (Centre de recherche et développement Arvida) de la compagnie Alcan Inc. et le CTA (Centre des technologies de l'aluminium) du CNRC mènent un effort concerté pour développer une version industrielle de la technologie SEED pour la fabrication de pâte d'aluminium semi-solide dédiée au moulage de pièces de haute performance, principalement pour l'industrie de l'automobile. Cette technologie brevetée parAlcan Inc. est un nouveau procédé simple et réduisant les coûts de préparation du matériau d'alimentation des procédés de formage. Le procédé implique deux étapes principales : l'extraction rapide d'une quantité contrôlée de chaleur de la charge de métal liquide afin de générer un mélange liquide/solide et le drainage de l'excès du liquide laissant derrière une masse compacte, se supportant elle-même et pouvant alors être manipulée et formée sous pression. Le procédé peut être utilisé avec une gamme étendue d'alliages d'aluminium et peut facilement être adapté pour produire différents poids de lopin pour le moulage. Le transfert de chaleur joue un rôle prédominant aussi bien lors de la fabrication de la pâte semi-solide que lors de la production des pièces et son analyse est présentée pour ces deux aspects.
