La cellulose bactérienne (CB) est un biomatériau découvert pour la première fois par Adrian J. Brown en 1886. Cependant, ce n'est qu'au début des années 2000 que la communauté scientifique a manifesté un intérêt exponentiel pour ce matériau, comme en témoigne l'augmentation du nombre d'articles publiés sur le sujet. En effet, ce biomatériau présente plusieurs propriétés qui le rendent unique par rapport aux matériaux actuellement utilisés. Ces propriétés comprennent un pourcentage d'hydratation supérieur à 95 % et une pureté plus élevée que les autres matériaux cellulosiques. De plus, la CB est reconnue comme étant biocompatible, non cytotoxique et présente une excellente résistance chimique, thermique et mécanique. Ce mémoire se concentre sur la caractérisation d'une CB provenant d'une nouvelle souche isolée à partir d'un « Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast » (SCOBY), en accordant une importance particulière à ses propriétés mécaniques et thermiques tout en maintenant le matériau sous sa forme hydratée. Ainsi, des essais de traction et de compression ont été développés afin d'évaluer le module de Young (E), la résistance maximale à la traction (UTS), l'allongement à la rupture et le module de compression. Ces essais ont permis de conclure quant à la forte élasticité et ductilité du biomatériau. La température de dégradation de la CB, toujours sous sa forme hydratée, a également été évaluée par analyse thermogravimétrique (TGA) et par calorimétrie différentielle à balayage (DSC). Cela a permis de conclure que la CB commence à se dégrader à partir de 290°C. Une caractérisation approfondie de ce biomatériau permet d'identifier les limites physiques auxquelles il peut être soumis lors de sa production et de sa mise en forme. De plus, elle contribue à formuler des hypothèses sur le comportement du biomatériau dans des applications concrètes, telles que le remplacement de tissus mous en chirurgie de reconstruction, où certaines contraintes mécaniques s'appliquent.
