L’insécurité alimentaire est un défi quotidien auquel doivent faire face environ 1,1 million de ménages canadiens (Statistique Canada, 2012). Les individus composant ces ménages doivent avoir recours à une diversité de stratégies visant à diminuer les dépenses ou à accroître les revenus disponibles. Ce mémoire vise à comprendre les éléments qui influencent le recours à ces stratégies en dégageant leur structure symbolique. Pour ce faire, des entrevues semi-dirigées ont été réalisées auprès de seize personnes ayant recours à l’aide alimentaire. Lors de ces entrevues, les participants étaient invités à décrire et à commenter les stratégies qu’ils utilisent. Ce faisant, il a été possible de répertorier les stratégies utilisées ainsi que de dégager les représentations qui y sont associées. L’analyse du corpus d’entrevues a révélé que les stratégies d’adaptation utilisées pour faire face à l’insécurité alimentaire sont orientées en fonction d’impératifs issus de l’environnement économique et normatif dans lequel les participants évoluent. Par conséquent, les personnes en situation d’insécurité alimentaire doivent se conformer à des règles sur lesquelles elles ont peu de contrôle. Toutefois, la manière dont les participants interprètent ces règles influence la logique du recours aux stratégies d’adaptation. Les différentes logiques d’action sont décrites dans quatre idéaltypes alliant à la fois les motivations poussant les personnes en situation d’insécurité alimentaire à recourir aux stratégies d’adaptation et la manière dont elles se les représentent.
