Abstract
Neste artigo, analisamos o manuscrito Paraguay Natural Ilustrado, escrito pelo padre jesuíta José Sánchez Labrador entre 1771-1776, durante seu exílio em Ravenna, na Itália. Esta obra, cujos originais se encontram no Archivo Romanum Societatis Iesu, se subdivide em quatro tomos -Terra, Água e Ar; Botânica; Mamíferos, Aves, Peixes; Anfíbios, Répteis e Insetos- e não foi até hoje integralmente publicada. Nela, além das percepções sobre a natureza americana e sobre sua utilidade e propriedades terapêuticas, encontramos menções aos “Hijos del Paraguay” e às “Personas naturales inteligentes”, bem como informações relativas aos saberes e às práticas curativas adotadas pelas populações nativas da vasta região da Província Jesuítica do Paraguai. Interessanos, especialmente, destacar e analisar as descrições que o missionário Sánchez Labrador fez tanto dos indígenas, quanto de seus conhecimentos tradicionais e práticas terapêuticas nos quatro tomos da obra.
