Abstract
This dissertation paper aims to examine the evolution and the quest of identity of Charmaine, the main character of Margaret Atwood's dystopian novel The Heart Goes Last (2015). Published two years ago, no critics have yet analyzed the novel thoroughly.This is the shortcoming that this dissertation will set out to address by taking a closer look at the Canadian author frequent themes; namely freedom, safety and identity. This analysis thus aims to examine Charmaineâs evolution and quest for identity through close reading of the impact of deceptive truths surrounding the heroine which are believed to exert a decisive influence on Charmaineâs vision of both herself and her environment. In order to see whether Charmaine evolves throughout the novel, this dissertation will first start by analyzing whether the heroine can resist and yield to illusions of security and freedom. The second chapter will be devoted to the analysis of Charmaineâs awakening towards her deceptive environment. Then, the last chapter will take a closer look at Charmaineâs reconstruction after her awakening to finally determine whether Charmaine manages to acquire her own personality.
