Undergraduate business education and pro-environmental behaviours: a multi group study

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore whether business students show a decreasing environmental orientation and engagement in pro-environmental behaviours at different years of their undergraduate program. 755 students from years 1 to 4 of the University of Guelph's Bachelor of Commerce program were surveyed. The results suggest that students have a decreasing propensity to engage in pro-environmental behaviours and support pro-environmental policies as they advance in the four-year program. It was also found that taking ethics courses and discussing ethical or environmental issues in business courses has a positive influence on the students' behavioural intentions. Researchers are encouraged to replicate this study in other universities, with different academic programs and with participants from different cultural backgrounds to expand the literature on this topic and to promote change in the current structure of business programs. A recommendation to incorporate ethics and environmental courses in business programs is made.
