La variabilité du mouvement serait apparemment essentielle au système locomoteur pour l'apprentissage de nouvelles tâches motrices, l'adaptation du mouvement à l'environnement et la réduction des stress localisés responsables des blessures par sollicitation abusive.La présente recherche fournie des données expérimentales inédites qui appuient cette dernière fonction dans un sport hautement répétitif : le cyclisme. Vingt-cinq cyclistes ont pédalé sur la route munis de pédales automatiques LOOK(TM) mesurant le flottement angulaire. Cette liberté de mouvement permet une rotation de 9À (normale à la pédale) entre le pied et le corps de la pédale. Un parcours de 20 km était effectué avec un minimum de restriction quant à la cadence et à la puissance développée. Les signaux de flottement bilatéraux ainsi collectés étaient divisés par coup de pédale pour les analyses statistiques. Une oscillation régulière du pied à chaque coup de pédale est observée en accord avec la littérature existante. De plus, entre deux coups de pédale consécutifs, l'orientation du pied change en moyenne de 2.13 « 0.86À (statistiquement différent de 0, p<0.01) sans structure apparente. Ce phénomène de repositionnement qui n'avait jamais été observé ou reporté dans la littérature constitue un exemple de variabilité de mouvement. En cyclisme, des pédales automatiques offrant du flottement favorisent la variabilité de mouvement pourraient contribuer au maintien de l'intégrité du système musculosquelettique. Cette idée doit être soutenue par un modèle tridimensionnel qui considère l'effet du flottement sur une base de temps relativement grande.
