Op de Klimaatconferentie in Parijs van 2015 is het 4 per 1000 initiatief gelanceerd. Dit initiatief stimuleert het vastleggen van koolstof in de bodem om de klimaatverandering tegen te gaan en tegelijkertijd de kwaliteit van de bodem te verbeteren en daarmee de voedselzekerheid te vergroten. De uitvoering van dit initiatief in Nederland is vastgelegd in het Klimaatakkoord. Tijdens een symposium bij de Amsterdam Green Campus (AGC) in 2019 over ‘Aansluiting onderzoek en onderwijs op het klimaatakkoord’, is de kiem gelegd voor een samenwerking tussen de partners van het AGC en de Université Catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain) m.b.t. het meten en monitoren van koolstofvastlegging in de bodem aan de hand van satellietbeelden.In 2020 is een verkennend onderzoek gestart, gefinancierd door de provincies Flevoland en Noord-Holland, met cofinanciering vanuit de onderwijsinstellingen. Hiermee is een eerste stap gezet om te bepalen of/hoe deze innovatieve meetmethode met satellietbeelden geschikt kan worden gemaakt voor toepassing onder Nederlandse omstandigheden (grondsoorten en teelt). Het project heeft inzicht en leerpunten opgeleverd over zowel de methodische aanpak als de samenwerking tussen de kennisinstellingen onderling en met het bedrijfsleven. Het inhoudelijke resultaat bood diverse aangrijpingspunten om de meetmethode gericht mee te optimaliseren. Daarom is in 2021 een nieuwe meetronde uitgevoerd met een aangepaste werkwijze.
