Madrid, 1897: una joven sociedad anónima publicó una revista titulada La Ciudad Lineal. Órgano Oficial de la Compañía Madrileña de Urbanización. Era un house organ creado para informar de las actividades de la Compañía Madrileña de Urbanización (CMU) fundada en 1894 por Arturo Soria y Mata (1844-1920) con la intención de construir ex novo un asentamiento urbano alternativo a la disfuncional ciudad industrial: la ciudad lineal. En 1902 la publicación cambió su nombre por el de La Ciudad Lineal. Revista de Urbanización, Ingeniería, Higiene y Agricultura. A pesar de la ambiciosa intención de iniciar una publicación científica sobre los temas de actualidad más modernos, la revista fue más bien un instrumento de promoción empresarial donde se publicaban artículos de divulgación, pero sobre todo comerciales. La revista La Ciudad Lineal era, por tanto, una herramienta para interceptar a posibles financistas y accionistas que quisieran invertir en el proyecto de Ciudad Lineal eligiendo los terrenos de la CMU para la construcción de sus propias viviendas.
