Le régime seigneurial a profondément marqué le paysage du Québec. Aboli en 1854, il a laissé des traces, à la fois culturelles, sociales et matérielles. La région de la Côte-du-Sud est particulièrement représentative de l’influence seigneuriale, puisque de nombreux seigneurs et seigneuries s’y retrouvent. La présence de nombreux manoirs seigneuriaux en ces lieux en est la preuve matérielle. Ces manoirs seigneuriaux font partie du patrimoine culturel du Québec. Par contre, tout comme les autres traces seigneuriales, ils ne sont pas tous considérés comme des objets méritant d’être conservés et d’obtenir la surveillance de l’État, même s’ils représentent des témoins importants du régime seigneurial au Québec. De fait, plusieurs conditions doivent être réunies pour qu’un bâtiment puisse faire partie de la liste des biens à protéger et à préserver. Parmi les nombreux éléments patrimoniaux, les traces du paysage, des bâtiments, des monuments commémoratifs, des témoignages, des personnages historiques et des objets du passé seigneurial suscitent un intérêt considérable tant pour la population que la communauté scientifique. En particulier, le manoir seigneurial demeure un symbole prédominant dans le paysage culturel du Québec qui permet de rappeler la matérialisation d’un pan incontournable de l’histoire du Québec. Cependant, ce ne sont pas tous les manoirs seigneuriaux qui ont été protégés par l’État, plusieurs d’entre eux ont disparu, ont subi des modifications majeures ou encore ont été complètement transformés. En effet, pour que les manoirs seigneuriaux puissent obtenir un statut particulier afin d’être préservés, ils ont dû passer par un processus de patrimonialisation complexe et variable, que cette étude vise à comprendre. Les manoirs à l’étude sont ceux de Montmagny, Cap-Saint-Ignace, Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, Saint-Roch des Aulnaies, La Pocatière et Kamouraska.
