Abstract
De visuele waarneming is een belangrijke bron van informatie bij het autorijden. Visuele beperkingen van de automobilist zullen dan ook van invloed zijn op de uitvoering van de rijtaak. De effecten op het ongevalsrisico zijn echter gering. Dit komt onder andere doordat mensen met visuele beperkingen daar vaak voor compenseren, door bijvoorbeeld de drukke spits en rijden in het donker te vermijden, de rijsnelheid aan te passen en andere kijkstrategieën aan te leren. Veel visuele beperkingen, zoals staar en verminderde gezichtsscherpte, komen vaker voor bij oudere mensen. Er zijn echter ook oogaandoeningen die geen verband houden met de leeftijd, zoals kleurenblindheid. De meeste gevolgen van visuele beperkingen zijn met hulpmiddelen of behandelingen te beperken, maar voor bijvoorbeeld kleurenblindheid geldt dit niet. Doordat veel visuele beperkingen zich over het algemeen zeer geleidelijk ontwikkelen, zijn mensen zich er vaak niet of erg laat van bewust.
