Áitítear san aiste seo go raibh go raibh tionchar nach beag ag sochaí patrarcach na Spáinne ar shaothar Mháire Mhac an tSaoi. Ba é an tréimhse a chaith sí in Madrid le linn dheachtóireacht Franco (idir 1949 agus 1951) an tréimhse thar lear ba mhó a mhúnlaigh a clár filíochta, agus, go speisialta, na dánta is cáiliúla agus is conspóidí sa chnuasach 'Margadh na Saoire' (1956). D'fhág an cnuasach 'Romancero Gitano' le Federico García Lorca a rian orthu, ainneoin go raibh cosc iomlán ar an saothar sin faoi réimeas Franco.
