Abstract
The issue of disposal of radioactive waste in Japan is extremely important especially after the accident of Fukushima No.1 Nuclear Power Plant at the time of the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 11, 2011. In this article, I studied\n1) related laws and regulations in Japan regarding the disposal of radioactive waste,\n2) The Principles of Radioactive Waste Management of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and\n3) related laws and regulations regarding the disposal of high level radioactive waste in Finland, Sweden, Germany, the USA and Canada.\nBased on the study above, I found out the following:\n1) In Japan, it is difficult to say that legal responsibility regarding the disposal of radioactive waste is clearly allocated.\n2) This situation may not be enough in comparison with The Principles of Radioactive Waste Management of IAEA.\n3) In Finland, Sweden, Germany, the USA and Canada, allocation of legal responsibility regarding the disposal of high\nlevel radioactive waste is clearly allocated in related laws.
