Der Zusammenhang von Nachhaltigkeit und Gesundheit liegt auf der Hand. Gesundheit ist auf eine nahchaltige Entwicklung, die ökologisch, ökonomisch und sozial verträgliche Lebensbedingungen und den Respekt vor kulturellen Eigenheiten anstrebt, angewiesen. Umgekehrt kann das gesellschaftliche Ziel der Nachhaltigkeit nicht ohne die Erfahrung individuellen Wohlbefindens und die Erkenntnis von Zusammenhängen zwischen diesem und ökologischen, ökonomischen, sozialen und kulturellen Fragen dauerhaft erreicht werden. Die beiden Diskurse über Gesundheit und Nachhaltigkeit, die jeweils einen wichtigen Ausgangspunkt - die Ottawa-Charta von 1986 und die "Agenda 21", die Erklärung von Rio 1992 - haben, wurden im Rahmen des Projekts Agenda 21 und Universität Lüneburg zusammengeführt.
