An acquisition sketch of Inuktitut
Bibliographic record
Abstract
Inuktitut is a language of the Inuit-Yupik-Unangan language family spoken by approximately 34,000 people in north-eastern Canada. The current study documents salient patterns of development in phonology, lexicon and semantics, morphology, syntax, and gesture in child-directed speech (CDS) and child language by analyzing five hours of spontaneous naturalistic interactions between children (age 1;4-3;4) and their families. The overview structure of the study follows the guidelines of the Sketch Acquisition Manual (Defina et al. 2023).In the CDS, we find that mothers' use of lexicon, morphosyntax, and gestures increases in complexity with the children's age. However, mothers' use of greeting routines and speech acts stays constant regardless of child age.In contrast, children's language increases in complexity in correspondence with age for every area that we examined. These findings confirm information about Inuktitut acquisition from previous studies using more data (Allen, in press). They also provide insight into areas of Inuktitut acquisition that have not yet been studied -including phonology, gestures, and speech acts -and thus contribute to increasing diversity in our knowledge of language acquisition.
Fetched live from OpenAlex and de-inverted. Abstracts are not stored in this database: the inverted indexes are 8.6 GB of the frame’s 9.3 GB of text, and the host has 13 GB free.

Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. Learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and 10,348 direct Gemma labels. Candidate is the union of thresholded teacher heads; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels or direct frontier model labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
score_only:v0-immature-baseline · verbatim from the scoring run: score_only means the number may rank works, and no category label ships from itClassification
machine, unvalidatedMachine predicted; both teacher heads agree on what is shown here.
