En attendant la venue d’un ordinateur quantique tolérant aux fautes, un défi d’intérêt pratique réside dans le développement d’algorithmes pouvant tirer profit de petits processeurs quantiques bruyants. Les algorithmes variationnels quantiques sont un exemple d’une telle méthode. Dans le cadre de ces algorithmes, un circuit de portes logiques quantiques, appelé ansatz, fonction d’onde d’essai ou fonction d’onde variationnelle (FOV), est exécuté dans le but de préparer l’état fondamental d’un système à résoudre. Malgré que la construction de la FOV dépende généralement du contexte, une approche populaire consiste à conserver le plus possible les symétries du problème, car cela simplifie en principe la tâche. Dans ce mémoire, je développe une nouvelle fonction d’onde allant à l’encontre de cette tendance. Avec mes collaborateurs à l’Institut quantique ainsi que chez IBM Research Zürich, nous proposons QOCA, une nouvelle FOV allant au-delà des approches standards et s’inspirant de la théorie du contrôle optimal de systèmes quantiques. L’idée novatrice derrière QOCA consiste à ajouter à la fonction d’onde d’essai une composante brisant volontairement et légèrement les symétries du problème. Ce choix à première vue contre-intuitif résulte en une FOV plus robuste menant à des résultats qui sont des ordres de grandeur plus précis que ceux produits par les approches conventionnelles. J’applique QOCA à des problèmes prototypiques en matériaux quantiques ainsi qu’en chimie quantique et je montre que cette nouvelle approche peut perturber l’état de l’art. De par sa construction flexible, QOCA constitue un premier pas vers le développement d’une classe plus générale de fonctions d’ondes variationnelles brisant les symétries avec des applications en physique et en chimie.
