Abstract
Intergenerational cultural dissonance is commonly noted in the literature between immigrant parents and children. Focusing on Canadian Muslim Bangladeshi families, this study gives the dual accounts of the processes that strengthen or strain immigrant parents and their adolescent children as they renegotiated their relationship after immigration. The dual perspectives revealed that gender rules, career expectations, dissonance in cultural values, bullying in school and lowered socio-economic status of the parents are major sources of strains. Themes of shared cultural and religious values, mutual empathy, flexible parenting and quality leisure time provided a sense of rootedness, family cohesion, and suSpport. Friendships, sibling support and an external social network offered assurance of understanding and practical assistance that alleviated strains for parents and adolescents. Larger social and institutional policies for equal educational and career opportunities shored up immigrants’ optimism about their future and contributed to a hopeful and positive outlook. Processes within and outside the family work in tandem to strengthen or strain the quality of relationships between Bangladeshi immigrant parents and their adolescent children.
