Abstract
The "Arundell" was built as an iron passenger steamer at Buffalo in 1878 for Cole et al. She was owned by the Cole & Holt Co., later becoming the Star-Cole Line. For years she had the Detroit-Port Huron run in the spring & fall, going to Lake Ontario in the summer running Oswego, Rochester and Thousand Islands. She was sold in 1909 to Crawford Trans. Co. of Chicago and placed on the Chicago-Saugatuck route. She burned Oct. 18, 1911 at Douglas, Michigan, but was reenrolled at New York as a barge in 1916 and again dropped in 1919. Redocumented again as the "Brewster" in 1920 as a gas propellor vessel, she sank in a collission with "Lake Stirling" on James River, North Carolina on April 21, 1922 with one casualty. The photo shows her frozen in the middle of Lake St. Clair on Christmas day, 1896.
