An architectural exploration of Mandirs: a new temple for the Sudbury Hindu community

Abstract
As the time changes, so do the methods \nof representation. Designs become intricate and \ncomplicated to the point where they need to return \nto the source of origin and start the search for a \ncontemporary temple design. The evolution of \nHindu temples from simple structure to complex \nstructure and from timber to brick, brick to stone, \nand stone to concrete appears throughout history. \nTo date, there are few Hindu temples that have \nbeen constructed according to the current time \nperiod. This thesis will examine the opportunities \nof designing a Hindu temple that is a combination \nof both modern elements and traditional beliefs, \nfor the many Hindu sects that live in Sudbury, \nCanada. This will be attempted by studying the \ntraditional methods of creating a mandir (Temple). \nAs Hinduism has many sects, and each of \nthem have slightly different beliefs in religion, it \nbecomes difficult to gather the entire community \nin these conditions and design a temple to one \ndedicated deity, especially in a foreign country. \nA temple becomes more than a place of worship \nwhen the mandir is located in a different country \nand environment; it becomes the center and grounding point of the Hindu community. It would \nrepresent the traditional culture that has adapted \nto a new geography, climate and environment. As a \nresult, this new mandir will aim to continue being \na home for the gods and goddess that are being \nworshiped by the current Hindu community of \nSudbury. It will house multiple gods, not just one \nas in a traditional temple, and this will become a \nmethod to keep everyone connected. As a temple \nin Sudbury would develop into something more \nthan a place of worship, it will also integrate a \nplace where cultural events such as Diwali (the \nFestival of Light), Navratri (Festival of Cultural \nDances) and many other events could take place. \nThe mandir will also become a place of traditional \nknowledge, for all ages and different religions. This \nmandir will be created by paying tribute to the \ntraditional temples, traditional texts, and methods \nsuch as using Vāstuśāstra as a basis for temple \ndesign and construction, adapting to the needs of \nthe community and site.
