Abstract
Peatlands are relatively abundant on the Quebec territory. They are one of the main types of ecosystems contributing to carbon sequestration. The construction of four hydroelectrical reservoirs on the Romaine River watershed located on the North Shore caused the flooding of various ecosystems, 12.5 % of which are peatlands. In June 2018, an ombrotrophic peatland was instrumented for specific studies on the carbon cycle and the impact of peatland flooding in reservoirs. Instruments have been installed to study the hydrological dynamics and quantify: precipitation (P), runoff (Q), evapotranspiration (ET) and water table fluctuations (∆h) in order to contribute to the estimation of the carbon budget. Two methods were used to estimate the specific yield (Sy) in the peat horizons: gravitational drainage method performed on a sample of peat and a rain to rise ratio method based on water table fluctuations. Laboratory analyses produced values of Sy ranging from 0.9 to 0.1 while values 0.87 to 0.1 were obtained with the water table fluctuation method. Both methods led to high Sy values in the first 5-10 centimeters of the peat, which rapidly decreased beyond these depths. Also, higher Sy values were obtained in peat horizons associated with the depressions compared to the hummocks and lawns. These results confirm the existence of a non-linear relationship between the water table levels and the storage coefficient. The Sy value is higher when the hydrostatic level fluctuates in the active zone of the peat column where humification is less pronounced and the water circulation more rapid. Calculation of ETP with three semi-empirical methods showed that during the warm months, the Penman-Monteith equation yields the highest rates of ETP and Thornthwaite the lowest. Monthly and seasonal water budgets show that evapotranspiration is responsible for the major loss of water in a bog. The variations of hydrodynamic properties of different peat layers and microtopographies, the effect of evapotranspiration and the initial state of the water table are all factors influencing storage and making it difficult to estimate. The examination of rainy events showed that a significant storage is only possible after the first rainy event following a period of drought. The potential for runoff is influenced by storage, which in turn depends on the initial state of the water table. Finally, the combination of the “CemaNeige” Snow module with the “PHIM” hydrological model was used to model the spring melt. Despite the short periods used for the model calibration and validation, PHIM has shown its effectiveness in conceptualizing the flow dynamics within the peatland.
