Aziatische essenprachtkever in aantocht"Het is niet de vraag of ie komt, maar wanneer ie komt."Volgens Rimvydis Vasaitas, Litouwse onderzoeker van de Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, is het vrijwel onmogelijk om de opkomst van de Aziatische essenprachtkever (Agrilus planipennis) te stoppen.Hij deed jarenlang onderzoek naar de verspreiding van de kever. Foto: Eduard Jendek/EPPOAgrilus planipennis komt oorspronkelijk uit Oost-Azië.De Aziatische essenprachtkever houdt vooral van verschillende soorten essen, zoals de smalbladige es (Fraxinus angustifolia), de gewone es (F.excelsior) of de pluim-es (F.ornus).De larve van de essenprachtkever richt de grootste schade aan, door zigzaggende gangen in het cambium van de boom te knagen, waarbij de boom vaak volledig geringd wordt.De bast valt eraf en de boom sterft.De essenprachtkever doodde al miljoenen essen in onder andere de Verenigde Staten, Canada en Rusland.In 2019 werd de kever ook gesignaleerd in Oekraïne en in september 2020 werd het insect gevonden in Sint-Petersburg, Rusland.Ook hier werden vele essen gedood, met name in de historische parken die de stad rijk is.
