Des voyageurs du commerce des fourrures provenant de la vallée du Saint-Laurent se sont installés à Ste-Geneviève, en Haute-Louisiane, durant le XVIIIe siècle. Ils y connurent des destins sociaux et économiques diversifiés et complexes. Située sur le bord du Mississippi, près de St-Louis, Ste-Geneviève était le premier établissement français à l’ouest du Mississippi. Tout comme en Nouvelle-France, un monde francophone continua d’exister en Louisiane longtemps après le Traité de Paris de 1763, bien que la colonie soit devenue une possession espagnole.\nLes archives notariales et les registres paroissiaux de Ste-Geneviève ont permis d’identifier 55 voyageurs. Une fois arrivés à Ste-Geneviève, ils adoptaient un mode de vie sédentaire. Il a été possible de constater que les destins sociaux des voyageurs avaient été diversifiés et complexes en étudiant leurs alliances matrimoniales, leur descendance, leurs liens familiaux dans le pays des Illinois et leur activité dans la communauté, aux niveaux religieux et administratif.\nLeurs destins économiques étaient également diversifiés et complexes, tant au niveau des activités économiques pratiquées qu’au niveau de la quantité de biens accumulée. Ainsi, en plus de pratiquer l’agriculture, le commerce, l’artisanat, la chasse et/ou le voyage, la plupart d’entre eux continuaient à être impliqués dans le commerce des fourrures. La réussite attendait certains, alors que d’autres ne purent éviter l’échec.
