Abstract
Approximately 15% of ulcerative colitis patients undergo surgical resection of the colon within 10 years of diagnosis, and are at an increased risk for postoperative morbidity and mortality. Clostridium difficile infection has been identified as an important independent risk factor in this population. Given the increased prevalence of C difficile infections over time and its associated burden to hospitalization and health care costs, its impact is potentially substantial. This populated-based, case-control study investigated whether C difficile infection among ulcerative colitis patients was associated with emergent colectomy and postoperative complications among a group of patients treated in the Calgary Health Zone (Alberta) between 2000 and 2009.
