Abstract
Samuel Hearne se narodil roku 1745 v Londýně a poté, co dokončil studia, vstoupil do válečného námořnictva. Za Sedmileté války sloužil pod velením kapitána Samuela Hooda a námořnictvo opustil roku 1763. O dva roku později (1766), se nechal zaměstnat společnosti Hudson Bay, zpočátku jako obchodník na zaoceánské lodi, která operovala v severoamerických arktických vodách. Poté byl převelen do stanice Fort Prince of Wales, a když mu bylo čtyřiadvacet let, byl pověřen, aby prozkoumal interiér ohromného arktického kontinentu. Ačkoli nevěděl nic o nerostech, měl za úkol objevit bájné měděné doly a za tímto účelem podnikl celkem tři velké výpravy. Nakonec byla jeho zpráva o nerostech celkem bezvýznamná v porovnání s jeho popisem severní Kanady a životě místních lidí. Byl to první detailní popis kanadského vnitrozemí a jen málo lidí jeho věku zvládlo tolik práce, kterou ještě obohatil skvělým vyprávěním, které vyšlo v knižní podobě. Roku 1774 založil stanici Fort Cumberland (severní Saskatchewan), což bylo první vnitrozemské obchodní středisko v severní Kanadě. V lednu roku 1776 byl jmenován guvernérem v stanici Fort Prince of Wales a v této funkci pracoval, až do roku 1782, kdy pevnost obsadili Francouzi. V Anglii pak strávil poslední dekádu svého života, kdy napsal svůj cestopis. Samuel Hearne zemřel roku 1792 a zcela jistě o něm můžeme dnes konstatovat, že patřil mezí největší severoamerické cestovatele.
