Abstract
The essay presents the restoration works carried out at the chiesa della Purissima ( church of the Immaculate Conception) located in Cagliari in the quarter of Castello. The church and the adjoining convent were built in the Sixteenth century, since then they have had a very important role in the religious and civic life of Castello, the stronghold center of the city. The church was acquired by the Italian State in 1867, its conditions were critical and degradation proceeded throughout the Twentieth century, when several partial restorations works were carried out, never solving the totality of the serious conservations problems concerning walls, vaults, roofing, floors, altars, artwork and furnishings. Therefore, starting from 1950, the church had to be closed to the cult. In 2007 the church was declared of cultural, historical and artistic interest, according to the law about the national heritage, the “Codice Urbani”. In 2009 the City of Cagliari with its technical staff conducted an overall campaign concerning the architectural restoration of the whole monument: façade, vaults, walls, sculptured details, marble and slate floor, windows and main door. At the same time the Soprintendenza of Cagliari and Oristano carried out the restoration of the XVIII C. altars and the other works of art housed in the church, as the beautiful paintings and sculptures dating from the XVI C. Works were concluded in 2012.
