Este artigo analisa os resultados de onze trabalhos de revisão de pesquisa internacionais realizados por encomenda do Banco Mundial e do IDRC (Institute of Development and Research Center) de Ottawa, Canadá. Descreve a evolução de tendências da pesquisa, apontando problemas metodológicos esculturais. Examina os achados quanto a recursos e processos escolares, quanto a aspectos do professor, estado nutricional dos alunos e retenção da alfabetização. Foi constatada convergência entre os achados de pesquisa no Brasil e os das revisões internacionais em geral. Considera que a pesquisa educacional de ponta vive um momento de revalorização dos fatores intra-escolares encarados em perspectiva contextualizada. A inadequação da escola à realidade da clientela é um dos pontos recorrentes nos achados do Brasil e das revisões internacionais.
