Las AAP son un grupo de bacterias fotoheterótrofas, que dependen del consumo de \nmateria orgánica como fuente principal de energía pero que poseen un sistema \nfotosintético que les permite usar la luz como fuente alterna de energía Esta \nflexibilidad metabólica representa una ventaja potencial para las AAP frente al resto \nde bacterias heterótrofas. Hasta ahora esa ventaja ha sido evidenciada en sus altas \ntasas de crecimiento y su carácter cosmopolita en los sistemas acuáticos. Sin \nembargo, la importancia de las AAP en los flujos de carbono y energía en los \necosistemas acuáticos es aún controversial pues su abundancia relativa es rara vez \nsuperior al 10%. Es posible que las AAP no se comporten siempre como \nfotoheterótrofas, pero actualmente desconocemos si este fenómeno ocurre en los \nsistemas naturales. En este trabajo se desarrolló una métrica para estimar la \nvariación de la fotoheterotrofía de las poblaciones de AAP en sistemas de agua dulce \ny relacionar dicha variación con la intensidad de la luz, la cantidad de carbono \norgánico disuelto, la concentración de nutrientes y la saturación de oxígeno disuelto. \nLa métrica propuesta combina dos variables: 1) El número de AAP que sintetizan el \npigmento captador de luz (Bacterioclorofila a) y 2) El número de células que poseen \nuno de los genes que codifican para las proteínas del centro de reacción fotosintético \n(puf M). Con el fin de evaluar esta métrica se estimó en 10 lagos de Quebec, la \nabundancia de AAP por microscopía de epifluorescencia infrarroja y por PCR \ncuantitativa. Observamos que la métrica varió entre 0,16 y 0,88 en el conjunto de \nlagos, esta variable se correlacionó directamente con el coeficiente de extinción de \nluz y negativamente con la concentración de oxígeno. Estos resultados confirman que \nla luz y el oxígeno juegan un papel regulador en la síntesis de bacterioclorofila y que \nel metabolismo fotoheterótrofo se favorece aun cuando la disponibilidad de luz es \nlimitada
