Durante las pasadas dos décadas, el director escolar ha cobrado una importancia significativa en el interés de la investigación educativa ya que ha sido identificado como pieza clave de la educación y sus procesos. Por su parte, la integración educativa de niños y jóvenes con necesidades educativas especiales ha cobrado igual relevancia dentro de los sistemas educativos dejando de ser un proceso reducido al discurso para convertirse en un hecho que alcanza cifras tan altas como el 79%. Tanto para los procesos llevados a cabo como parte de la dirección escolar, como los procesos de integración educativa en sí, existe una normatividad establecida que recoge leyes, políticas públicas, reglamentos, manuales y otros documentos. Como parte de lo establecido en esta normatividad, se le exige al director escolar un mayor involucramiento en el proceso de integración educativa, dejando poco espacio para evitar que se continúen con hábitos administrativos pobres al no tomar acción. A través de un acercamiento cualitativo utilizando el estudio de caso múltiple, el presente escrito tiene como objetivos el poder hacer un acercamiento teórico y normativo sobre el rol del director escolar en el proceso de integración educativa y compartir diferentes prácticas integradoras que han sido desarrolladas por directores escolares para poder cumplir con las funciones que le son exigidas por la normatividad en tres contextos socio-educativos diferentes: Nuevo León, Puerto Rico y Alberta (Canadá).
