Abstract
This thesis is concerned with the exploration and examination of Chiac, a mixed contact dialect particular to the greater region of Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada. The first chapter of this study aims to provide a historical context to help understand the origins and evolution of this dialect; in the second chapter, and by examining examples of vocabulary, grammatical, and phonological structures, this study intends to underscore the distinct linguistic character of Chiac. Last, this thesis examines various challenges speakers of Chiac often face today, be it the provision of public services in their dialect or the resistance by the francophone community to recognize the Chiac cultural identity, thus impacting an ability for their community to prosper economically in their own environment.
