Abstract
The article covers the language policy in the U. S. schools of the 20 th century based on the English monolingualism ideology. The author emphasizes the difficulties of realizing bilingual programs designed for teaching children belonging to linguistic minorities in schools of the United States. The English-Only movement is characterized; it gained wide public support in the USA in the last quarter of the previous century and influenced the school teaching. Some of the sociolinguistic and cultural results of the language policy pursued in the USA are described
