Abstract

El ensayista inglés John Ruskin (1819-1900) dedicó gran parte de su profusa obra a investigar fenómenos meteorológicos, especialmente al estudio de las nubes. Estos textos se caracterizan por aunar tres dimensiones: a la estética se suma el interés científico por describir, comprender y explicar la naturaleza, y el moral, concerniente a las indagaciones en torno a la autenticidad de la existencia humana, tal como se expresa en la experiencia del paisaje. En el presente trabajo, nos proponemos retomar estas tres dimensiones tal como se expresan en sus conferencias «The Storm-Cloud of the Nineteenth Century» (1884), en las que expone un fenómeno que no había sido descrito hasta entonces: una inmensa y extraña nube suspendida sobre Inglaterra, que marchitaba las plantas, enfermaba a los hombres y empañaba el sol, dándole el aspecto de una moneda en un vaso de agua jabonosa (Ruskin 87-89). El objetivo de nuestro trabajo es vincular este ensayo literario de finales del siglo XIX con dos ensayos cinematográficos de finales del XX y principios del XXI: Lektionen in Finsternis (1992) de Werner Herzog y Petropolis: Aerial Perspectives on the Alberta Tar Sands (2009) de Peter Mettler. Ambas obras se detienen en las inmensas nubes que surgen del fuego en yacimientos petrolíferos. Creemos ver en esta forma poética de presentar las imágenes documentales, propia del género del cine ensayo, una nueva expresión de la categoría transtemporal de lo sublime, predominante también en las poéticas descripciones brindadas por Ruskin en su conferencia.
