Abstract
"La ciudad de San Juan, ubicada en la porción centrooeste de la República Argentina, en laregión de mayor sismicidad del país, fue afectada en enero de 1944 por un terremoto destructivo(Ms = 7.4) que causó más de 10,000 muertes y cuantiosas pérdidas económicas.Los reportes históricos en la región asocian este sismo a una falla localizada 25 km al nortede la ciudad de San Juan, en la localidad de La Laja, con una ruptura superficial de 8 km y un desplazamientovertical máximo de 0.60 m. Estudios posteriores demuestran que estos valores de rupturasuperficial no concuerdan con los obtenidos al aplicar las relaciones empíricas utilizadas en elmundo, para una magnitud de Ms = 7.4.En este trabajo se muestran evidencias de ruptura superficial en cuatro fallas ubicadas en lazona de La Laja que probablemente se reactivaron durante el sismo de 1944 y cuya sumatoria delongitudes de ruptura superficial y desplazamiento vertical máximo coincidiría con los valores esperadosal aplicar las relaciones empíricas."
