Abstract
George Bukator (1913-1987) was a Niagara Falls politician who served as Mayor of Niagara Falls, Ontario, from 1973 to 1978. He began his career in politics in 1947 when he was elected a Chippawa Village Counsellor. He then served as Reeve of Chippawa for 10 years, and on the Niagara Parks Commission from 1951 to 1957. From 1959 to 1971 he was the MPP for the Niagara Falls riding. Bukator was involved in several community projects in Niagara Falls, including the development of Niagara Square, Dorchester Manor Home for the Aged, Weightman Bridge, the Victoria Avenue Public Library, the Chair-a-Van program, and the Coronation Centre. A park on the Welland River is named after him. In addition to his political activities, Bukator is known for saving several people from drowning in the Welland and Niagara rivers. In 1938 he helped rescue two boys who had fallen into the Welland River. In 1944 he was involved in the rescue of three teenagers whose raft was swept down the Niagara River towards to Falls. For his role in this dramatic rescue he was awarded the Carnegie Bronze Medal for Bravery.
