El presente trabajo tiene por objeto el análisis de determinado mecanismo que las finanzas modernas han perfeccionado a efectos de colaborar con el desarrollo sostenible de los países, facilitando la adopción de acciones tendientes a la protección del medio ambiente y a la disminución del impacto climático de las actividades económicas. Este mecanismo contribuye al cumplimiento de los compromisos en materia de disminución de las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero (GEI), asumidos por los países en el marco de la ratificación de acuerdos internacionales tales como el Protocolo de Kioto y el Acuerdo de París. También es utilizado por quienes en forma voluntaria se auto-exigen el cumplimiento de ciertos límites de emisión. Se analizarán los mercados existentes a nivel regional e internacional donde se negocian ciertos instrumentos financieros denominados certificados de carbono, emitidos con el objetivo de captar fondos para ser destinados a actividades sustentables.
