La sonde Cassini a révélé en 2006 l existence de lacs et de mers dans les régions polaires de Titan, la principale lune de Saturne. Ces lacs seraient remplis de méthane et d éthane liquides, métastables à la surface de Titan, tout comme l est l eau sur Terre. La forme arrondie des dépressions dans lesquelles ils résident suggère une formation des dépressions par des processus volcaniques, thermokarstiques, karstiques ou évaporitiques. Cette thèse vise donc à comprendre le mécanisme de formation et le développement des dépressions lacustres sur Titan. L étude comparative entre Ontario Lacus, la plus grande dépression lacustre de l hémisphère Sud, et le pan d Etosha, une dépression karsto-évaporitique de Namibie, suggère un scénario de formation basé sur la dissolution d une couche superficielle soluble dans les liquides. Cette couche se formerait par (1) cristallisation évaporitique sous climat aride de composés organiques dissous dans les liquides, et/ou (2) accumulation en surface d hydrocarbures solides synthétisés dans l atmosphère. Les analogies entre d autres dépressions lacustres sur Titan et sur Terre semblent indiquer que la dissolution et l évaporation jouent un rôle prépondérant dans le façonnement et l évolution de la surface de Titan. La comparaison entre les climats de Titan et de la Terre indique l existence d un climat globalement aride, plus humide aux hautes latitudes, compatible avec les mécanismes karstiques et évaporitiques suggérés. Des expériences en laboratoire, des cartographies de composition de la surface et des études géomorphologiques futures apporteront des contraintes supplémentaires sur le lien entre ces processus et le climat de Titan.
