La firme montréalaise Papineau, Gérin-Lajoie, Leblanc architectes représente un incontournable de la scène architecturale moderne de la fin des années 1950 au Canada. Sa contribution à la formation et à l'assise d'un patrimoine moderne canadien authentique peut être appréciée au travers de la série de projets que la firme développera pour le Nunavik et le Nunavut entre 1968 et 1993. Le contexte arctique représentera pour la firme un laboratoire expérimental privilégié pour le déploiement d'une nouvelle façon de construire, plus légère et moins conventionnelle. Notre recherche revient en détails sur les huit concepts développés pour le Grand Nord exploitant le système de fabrication d'enveloppe de bâtiment en panneaux préfabriqués, monocoques, multicouches, composés de matériaux composites (ou plastiques) renforcés de fibre de verre (P.R.F). Les travaux antérieurs ne donnent que des avant-gouts fragmentés de cette entreprise. Cette recherche se propose alors de rassembler sous un même ouvrage les différents composants constitutifs de la série de projets en fibre de verre dans l'Inuit Nunangat principalement depuis la formation de la firme, en passant par le caractère particulier du système de construction, jusqu'aux enjeux et problématiques actuels qui gravitent autour de ces projets. En parallèle de cette rétrospective, ce mémoire permettra de mettre en avant les retombées des bâtiments de Papineau Gérin-Lajoie Leblanc architectes sur les communautés Inuit concernées; ceci en mettant en lumière les frustrations vécues depuis le début de la période de Sédentarisation (1950) jusqu'aux perspectives de développement avenir. _____________________________________________________________________________ MOTS-CLÉS DE L’AUTEUR : architecture moderne; Inuit Nunangat; préfabrication; matières composites; panneaux; P.R.F.; fibre de verre; patrimoine
