Abstract
Bir tarihçinin, içinde yaşadığı dönemi ele alması ve şahidi olduğu çağın tarihini yazması önemlidir. Bu anlamda XIV. yüzyılda yaşamış ve Kitabu'l-İber ve Divanu'l-Mubdedei ve'l-Haber adlı genel bir tarih yazmış olan İbn-i Haldun, eserin Mukaddime'sinde, içinde yaşadığı yüzyılda İslâm dünyasının farklı bölgelerindeki ahval hakkında bir takım bilgiler vermiştir. Mukaddime'nin, değişik bölümlerinde dağınık hâldeki değerlendirmeler, bu çalışmada Eğitim-öğretim, Sosyal Hayat, Siyasî Hayat, Sanat ve Mimarî genel başlıkları altında toplanarak on dördüncü yüzyılda İslâm dünyasının durumu, çağdaş bir müellifin gözüyle tespit edilmeye çalışılmıştır. Sonuçta müellifin eğitim-öğretimi bir sanat olarak gördüğü, şehirleşmenin temelinde, ihtiyaçların giderilmesinin yer aldığı, sanat ve mimarinin sadece bir toplumun kendi birikimleriyle değil aynı zamanda başka faktörlerin özellikle de aynı topraklarda yaşamış önceki medeniyetlerin etkisiyle şekillendiği tespit edilmiştir.
