La présente étude longitudinale se penche sur l'évolution de deux paramètres de l'ajustement psychologique de l'adolescent (estime de soi et détresse psychologique) et examine l'impact possible des pratiques parentales (soutien affectif et contrôle abusif) sur ces paramètres. À 14, 16 et 18 ans, des adolescents de la région du Saguenay-Lac- St-Jean ont participé à une enquête longitudinale (ELESJ-14). Des analyses de trajectoire paramétriques ont été effectuées sur un échantillon de 605 adolescents. Les participants ont répondu à un questionnaire auto-administré, incluant notamment l'Échelle d'estime de soi de Rosenberg (Vallières et Vallerand, 1990), le Ilfeld-14 (Préviîle, Boyer, Poîvin, Perreault, & Légaré, 1992) (détresse psychologique) et des échelles de mesure du soutien affectif et du contrôle abusif parental (Deschesnes, Schaefer, & Couture, 1997). Les analyses ont permis de constater que l'estime de soi augmente avec l'âge, que les garçons rapportent systématiquement un niveau d'estime soi plus élevée que les filles et que le soutien affectif maternel et paternel a un impact positif sur le niveau d'estime de soi. L'impact du contrôle abusif maternel évoluerait avec le temps. Ainsi un contrôle abusif maternel élevé par rapport à la moyenne aurait un effet négatif sur l'estime de soi des adolescents mais seulement à 16 et 18 ans. Les résultats révèlent également que le niveau de détresse psychologique serait stable entre 14 et 18 ans. Toutefois, les filles rapporteraient un niveau de détresse psychologique plus élevé que les garçons. Le soutien affectif des parents aurait pour effet de faire diminuer le niveau de détresse psychologique rapporté tandis que le contrôle abusif parental le ferait augmenter, et ce, à 14, 16 et 18 ans. Ces résultats étayent l'importance de mettre sur pied des programmes de prévention et d'intervention destinés à favoriser les pratiques et attitudes optimales chez les parents d'adolescents, celles-ci étant reconnues avoir un impact positif sur l'ajustement psychologique des adolescents.
