Abstract
Introduction: more than 40 years after the Ottawa Charter (1986) and its proposal to include health promotion in the hospital environment, using the Health Promoting Hospital (HPH) approach. Hospitals such as the Marine Hospital of Hendaye, because of its speciality, could benefit from these guidelines and engage with them to broaden the concept of health in their establishment. Objective: the main objective of this study is to carry out a survey of health promotion activities and interventions at the Marine Hospital of Hendaye. This survey is part of the first stage of the commitment to the health-promoting hospital approach. Method: the assessment and study of the state of play at the intervention site was carried out by means of a survey of all hospital employees (614) over a period of 3 weeks (16 August-6 September 2022). The uni-centric study was based on a descriptive and cross-sectional approach. The survey was divided into 4 sections: 1) descriptive information about the respondents 2) 3) 3-word definition of health promotion 3) questions based on the 5 standards proposed by the WHO in reverse order and calculated with the Likert scale and 4) list of actions/projects carried out by the respondents. Results: 63 people (10.26% of employees) completed the survey in full. Women were in the majority with 79.8% of respondents. Almost half of the respondents were over 50 years old and had worked for more than 10 years in the hospital. Words of positive consequence were most frequently used (24.4%) and the most frequent word was "prevention". Most of the actions are primary prevention. The norms of patient assessment and especially the norm of a healthy work environment scored highest (62, 75) and the other norms scored emergent (46, 43 and 35). The last standards studied had the highest abstention rate, at over 30%. Conclusion: this study shows that health promotion is established in the hospital (52 out of 100). A cell should be set up to ensure and coordinate health promotion projects and actions in order to guarantee their sustainability, and training programmes should be offered to raise awareness of the importance of health promotion at the Hendaye Marine Hospital.
