Abstract
In this project we are going to explore a problem related to the storage energy system, which serves as backup for the possible installation of a 1400 km line which connects Manitoba to Nunavut. The purpose of this line is not only to reduce the cost of the energy but also to reduce the dependency on fossil fuel, reducing the pollution of the province. Fossil fuel is needed to create electricity and to heat families. Currently, the heating system is relying on it. But, with the arriving of the power line, an upgraded heating system based on electricity could be implemented. Due to this fact, a new challenge has emerged, as a backup system is needed when a fault on the line happens. The necessity of an efficient and reliable backup system is caused by the extreme weather presented in Nunavut, when in winter temperatures can go further below 0. Consequently, constant heating in those months is a matter of necessity. This backup system could be diesel generators used to produce electricity and for the purposes talked above. However, as one objective of the power line is to reduce the dependency on fossil fuel, a further investigation with an environmentally friendly storage system is required. The aim of this project is to provide an analysis of the different options to serve as a backup system when a fault on the line happens. These options will be chosen with the constraints of a fossil fuel independence. Hence, we will investigate a system relying on atteries, hydrogen fuel cells or a mix of them. Once proved the viability of the new backup system, we will discuss the financial issue attained to it. Because, at first glance, both systems are more expensive than the diesel generators. In order to compensate for this issue, some options on obtaining profit from the new systems will be discussed. Finally, after having contemplated all the matters, we will decide whether or not the new backup system based on efficient and green methods is suitable from a feasible and economic point of view. For the purpose of this project, the Hot2000 program will be used to obtain the value of the energy in terms of electricity needed for the heating system. As the current system relies on heating boilers based on fossil fuel. The Homer Pro program will also be used to analyse and obtain the results required to finally get the conclusions of the project. It will be used for creating the load of the 5 communities, from both the electricity and the electric heating demand, which will be supplied by the new power line supported by the new backup system.
