Die Tiefenwasserbildung in der Labradorsee, gesteuert durch komplexe Wechselwirkungen zwischen ozeanischen, atmosphärischen und Eisschelf-Prozessen, hat nachweisliche Auswirkungen auf die Stärke der atlantischen meridionalen Umwälzzirkulation, die wiederum eng mit dem globalen Klima verbunden ist. Klimamodelle sind für die Untersuchung dieser komplexen Zusammenhänge von zentraler Bedeutung. Allerdings haben Modelle des National Center for Atmospheric Research wiederholt Simulationen mit Labradorsee-Eiskonzentrationen erzeugt, die nicht mit verfügbaren Beobachtungen übereinstimmen. Derzeit ist jedoch unklar, welche Prozesse die Vereisung der Labradorsee verursachen. In dieser Studie wurden Daten von prä-industriellen Kontrollensembles des CESM2-Modells analysiert. Zeitreihen- und Composite-Analysemethoden wurden angewandt, um temporale und geographische Unterschiede zwischen zwei Kategorien von Ensemblemitgliedern – freeze und nofreeze – zu identifizieren, und um die Ursachen für die abrupte Abkühlung in der Labradorsee zu diagnostizieren. Bei der Untersuchung der Nordatlantikregion zeigte sich sowohl in den freeze- als auch in den nofreeze-Simulationen eine deutliche, aber vergleichbare Abkühlung der Meeresoberflächentemperatur im subpolaren Wirbel des Nordatlantiks vor dem Einsetzen der Vereisung der Labradorsee. Es wurde jedoch eine signifikante Diskrepanz in den Meeresoberflächentemperaturen des tropischen Pazifiks auf dekadischen Zeitskalen zwischen diesen beiden Fällen festgestellt. Es wird vermutet, dass dieser Phasenunterschied in der dekadischen Variabilität des Pazifiks über Fernwirkungen in der atmosphärischen Zirkulation – sogenannte Telekonnektionen – den Nordatlantik beeinflusst und die Vereisung in der Labradorsee auslöst. Weitere Untersuchungen unter Verwendung von Pacemaker-Experimenten werden empfohlen, um diesen vorgeschlagenen Mechanismus zu validieren und zusätzliche Erkenntnisse über den Einfluss des tropischen Pazifiks auf die Labradorsee zu erlangen.
