Jusque dans ses écrits les plus intimes, tout écrivain travaille encore à l'élaboration de son premier personnage ; son je privé s'altère au contact inéluctable avec le « mentir vrai » de la littérature.Car, quoi qu'on ait pu en écrire, c'est bel et bien de littérature qu'il est question dans ces huit cents pages de correspondance conjugale jusqu'ici inédites, ne serait-ce qu'avec l'extension d'un « mythe personnel » bien ancré dans l'œuvre canonique de Gabrielle Roy : un personnage autobiographique non désiré, comme la Christine de Petite misère, dans Rue Deschambault, qui méritait pourtant qu'on l'aime.Nous découvrons peu à peu un rituel d'écriture (apparemment banal, convenons-en), des ponctuations dans cet espace compris entre les départs, présentés comme des occasions de dépaysement relatif ou d'ennui nécessaires à l'écriture, et les textes aboutis dont Marcel est, dans l'esprit de Gabrielle Roy, en 1948, le premier bénéficiaire, sinon le collaborateur.Même si certaines étapes intermédiaires sont plus techniques, l'ensemble du travail de création s'insère plutôt dans un idéal humaniste capable de promouvoir
