Abstract
Lors d'une réflexion sur l'École au Québec qui mènera à la réalisation d'un volume de l'Atlas historique du Québec, des chercheurs de plusieurs disciplines ont débattu des outils statistiques qui leur permettraient de reconstituer l'évolution du système scolaire à l'échelle de la province et de la cartographier. Bruce Curtis, Andrée Dufour, Jocelyne Murray et Chad Gaffield ont retracé les limites de ces sources et évalué leur fiabilité lors d'un atelier scientifique organisé à l'Université Laval. La gamme de leur verdict va de la circonspection restrictive à l'utilisation prudente. Autour d'échanges très nourris, reproduits dans cet ouvrage, ont émergé des positionnements méthodologiques importants comme la prise en compte des itinéraires individuels, celle du regard des enquêteurs et la réalisation d'analyses régionales fouillées qui viennent compenser des statistiques changeantes et parfois très fragiles. La réflexion sur l'utilisation de ces sources et leur exploitation graphique et cartographique a le mérite de bousculer les catégories d'analyse et d'inciter les chercheurs à une remise en question de leurs schémas interprétatifs.
