L'industrie forestière est une des causes principales de déforestation à l'échelle globale et est, par le fait même, une menace majeure pour les espèces fauniques indigènes dans la plupart des pays où cette activité anthropique a cours. Le Chili, une des têtes d'affiche sur le marché mondial des produits ligneux, ne fait pas exception à cette règle. En effet, le développement du secteur forestier dans ce pays s'est effectué selon un modèle mercantiliste ne permettant pas l'intégration de la conservation de la biodiversité dans les objectifs de gestion. Comme c'est le cas ailleurs dans le monde, la perte des habitats forestiers naturels a laissé place à l'apparition de forêts artificielles à vocation commerciale, les plantations industrielles. Cette situation est particulièrement alarmante dans la Cordillère Côtière du centre-sud du Chili, où les peuplements plantés d'essences exotiques ont carrément envahi le paysage au cours des 50 dernières années, menaçant gravement le biote qui fait de cette zone un point chaud de biodiversité à l'échelle planétaire. Or, la problématique sous-jacente à l'instauration massive de plantations forestières peut également être considérée comme une opportunité puisque ces écosystèmes productifs peuvent significativement contribuer à la conservation des espèces s'ils sont aménagés et gérés de manière adéquate. Cet essai propose des moyens pour concilier la conservation de la faune et la production forestière en prenant comme théâtre la Cordillère Côtière du Chili. En se fiant aux approches communément utilisées en biologie de la conservation, ainsi qu'aux avenues préalablement testées dans d'autres pays étant confrontés à ce genre de crise, il en ressort des solutions vraisemblablement applicables au contexte chilien. À leur tour, ces solutions, qui incluent des mesures de mitigation et des mécanismes facilitant l'implémentation de ces mesures, mènent à l'élaboration d'un processus cyclique de conservation qui fait intervenir tous les acteurs concernés. Au final, le manque de volonté politique se présente comme le principal frein à l'application des recommandations citées pour le Chili. L'espoir réside alors dans la valorisation de la biodiversité par la société chilienne.
