Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

Young people in Quebec are growing up in a context marked by identity tensions linked to national sentiment, societal debates often perceived as polarized and an increasing individualization of their connection to politics. This period of life, during which the construction of political opinions is particularly important, is also essential for establishing one's relationship to the collectivity and to social issues. However, there is limited research focusing on how young people in Quebec articulate their various political opinions and how these align with broader ideological orientations. Employing a theoretical framework centred on social representations and drawing from semi-structured interviews with young people representing a variety of socio-demographic profiles, this study explores how they articulate their representations of the Quebec nation with their attitudes towards two other major social issues: climate change and poverty. The analysis unveils a complex and nuanced articulation between their sense of national identity and their opinions on these issues, achieved through a process of coherence grounded in underlying ideological orientations, thereby revealing four distinct perspectives on preferred social organization: society, community, state, and freedom. Overall, this study highlights the existence of a wide diversity of political opinions among young people in Quebec, thus contributing to enriching our understanding of contemporary societal debates.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
