Riassunto Da tempo i polifenoli naturali hanno attratto crescente interesse per i loro effetti benefici sulla salute umana e nei confronti di numerose malattie tra cui il diabete. Uno dei principali composti fenolici recentemente studiati è l’oleuropeina, presente nelle foglie e nelle drupe oleaginose dell’olivo. Tra le diverse proprietà nutraceutiche dell’oleuropeina, il suo potere ipoglicemizzante ha trovato largo impiego clinico in medicina umana. Allo stato attuale non abbiamo a disposizione lavori che abbiano valutato il potenziale effetto ipoglicemizzante dell’oleuropeina nel cane. Lo scopo della tesi è stato quello di valutare l'effetto della oleuropeina sulla glicemia nel cane. Lo studio è stato effettuato su 10 cani di razza Labrador Retriever e Border Collie, di diversa età e clinicamente sani. I soggetti hanno ricevuto per due settimane un integratore nutrizionale contenente oleuropeina alla dose di 2 mg/kg/die. Prima della somministrazione dell’integratore e al termine di ciascuna settimana è stata valutata la curva glicemica posprandiale dopo somministrazione di un pasto costituito da soli carboidrati (6 mg/kg di amido). Per la valutazione della curva glicemica è stato utilizzato un test rapido (Pic Gluco Test) utilizzando una goccia di sangue a digiuno (T0) e dopo il pasto a 30 (T30), 60 (T60), 90 (T90) e 120 (T120) minuti. Nonostante il breve periodo di somministrazione i risultati ottenuti hanno mostrato valori più bassi di glicemia e una tendenza alla stabilizzazione precoce pur in assenza di significatività. Tali risultati stimolano sicuramente a proseguire le indagini con dosaggi più elevati e/o con somministrazioni prolungate. Abstract Natural polyphenols have long attracted growing interest in their beneficial effects on human health and against many diseases including diabetes. One of the main phenolic compounds recently studied is oleuropein, present in olive leaves and oil drupes. Among the various nutraceutical properties of oleuropein, its hypoglycemic power has found wide clinical use in human medicine. At present, the potential hypoglycaemic effect of oleuropein in dogs are not evaluated. The aim of the thesis was to evaluate the effect of oleuropein on glycemia in dogs. The study was carried out on 10 dogs clinically healthy. Subjects received for two weeks a nutritional supplement containing oleuropein at a dose of 2 mg/kg/day. Prior to administration of the supplement and at the end of each week the posprandial glycemic curve was evaluated after administration of a carbohydrate-only meal (6 mg/kg of starch). For the evaluation of the glycemic curve a rapid test (Pic Gluco Test) was used using a drop of blood on a fasting basis (T0) and after the meal at 30 (T30), 60 (T60), 90 (T90) and 120 (T120) minutes. Despite the short period of administration, the results showed lower blood glucose values and the tendency towards early stabilization even in the absence of significance. These results certainly stimulate to continue the investigations with higher dosages and/or with prolonged administrations.
